The Arc National The Arc (formerly Association for Retarded Citizens of the United States) is the country's largest voluntary organization committed to the welfare of all children and adults with mental retardation and their families. The Arc is a 501 ( c) (3) charitable non-profit organization supported by contributions from the general public. The Arc, with its rich history in advocacy and services, is comprised of individuals with mental retardation, family members, professionals in the field of disability and other concerned citizens. The Arc has adopted various positions on issues that affect people with mental retardation and their families, and the organization's mission statement forms the basis for the organization's activities. The Arc of New Jersey The Arc of New Jersey is a statewide, private, nonprofit advocacy organization founded in 1947 by a group of parents who had a vision of building a better quality of life for people with mental retardation and their families. Consisting of a state office and nineteen local chapters, The Arc of New Jersey is affiliated with The Arc, a national organization on mental retardation with 1200 chapters nationwide. New JerseyNJ Division of Developmental Disabilities The Division of Developmental Disabilities provides services in the least restrictive environment possible, to foster individual development and independence to people with the following disabilities:Mental Retardation, Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Spina Bifida, Epilepsy and Other Neurological Impairments. NJ Department of Human Resources The Department of Human Services (DHS), in concert with New Jersey's non-profit community, serves more than one million persons a year, or about one of every eight New Jersey residents. Created in 1976 from the Department of Institutions and Agencies, DHS is the largest department in state government. The department offers services through eight divisions and operates fifteen major facilities - seven operated by the Division of Mental Health Services and eight operated by the Division of Developmental Disabilities.There are three residential centers operated by the Division of Youth and Family Services. The Joseph Kohn Rehabilitation Center is supervised by the Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired. DHS provides the majority of its community services through purchase of service contracts with private non-profit community agencies throughout New Jersey. Research and Training Center on Family Support & Children's Mental Health The Center's activities focus on improving services to families whose children have mental, emotional or behavioral disorders through a set of related research and training programs. OSERS: National Institute on Disability & Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) The ICDR is responsible for identifying, assessing, and seeking to coordinate and promote cooperation among all Federal program activities, projects, and plans with respect to the conduct of research related to rehabilitation of individuals with disabilities; facilitating the compilation of information about the status of rehabilitation research sponsored by Federal agencies; developing and maintaining a system for exchange of information among ICDR members and other departments with concern for rehabilitation research; establishing mechanisms for interdepartmental consultation, cost-sharing of research projects, personnel, data, equipment, client/patient information, and other activities as appropriate to rehabilitation research; encouraging and expediting interagency agreements in areas of rehabilitation research of mutual concern; preparation of reports to the President and Congress; making recommendations with respect to coordination of policy and development of objectives and priorities; providing comments and consultation in the development of the NIDRR long-range plan; developing policies for the conduct of ICDR subcommittees and supervising the progress of such subcommittees; holding meetings of the full ICDR no less than four times a year; and maintaining on-going communication with the National Council on Disability. Technical Assistance Alliance for Parent Centers- The Alliance is an innovative project that focuses on providing technical assistance for establishing, developing, and coordinating Parent Training and Information Projects and Community Parent Resource Centers under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). National Center for Family Support- The Human Services Research Institute (HSRI) has established the National Center for Family Support (NCFS) at HSRI. NCFS was established to provide training and technical assistance on family support to 42 project sites.
